Two teenagers were made to clean police vehicles with the aid of toothbrushes supplied by their parents after being arrested for launching mud at a passing Peterlee Police van.

Two 16-year-old boys were enlisted to spend Thursday afternoon, Thursday, February 25 washing police vehicles after the offenders threw mud at a passing police van.

Peterlee police gave the teenagers the opportunity to ‘clean up’ their act after launching the projectiles, in the hope of curbing their anti-social behaviour.

The pair, who wore balaclavas and ran after the van throwing the mud were arrested on Sunday night.

Police said they hope the boys have had time to consider the consequences of throwing things at moving vehicles and brought an opportunity for their officers to engage with them and steer them in a better direction.

Officers say the boy’s parents have been “very supportive” of this decision and even supplied them with toothbrushes “to make sure every detail comes out gleaming.”

Inspector Emma Kay, of Peterlee Neighbourhood Police Team, said: “The consequences of throwing things at moving vehicles can be far more serious than these two realise, which I’m sure they’ve had time to consider while washing the cars.

“This is an opportunity not only for the two young offenders to take ownership of their actions, but also for our officers to engage with them and steer them in a more productive direction.

“The parents have been very supportive of this decision and are grateful that their boys are willing to think twice before heading down a criminal route.”
