North East tributes to 'great man' Captain Tom

-

Messages of love and support were posted in honour of Captain Sir Tom Moore and his family following a private funeral for the veteran and NHS fundraiser.

Captain Sir Tom was laid to rest during a small service Bedford Crematorium on Saturday, February 27, following his death earlier this month.

His coffin was carried to the crematorium by soldiers from the Yorkshire Regiment while a Second World Warera C-47 Dakota performed a flypast.

Captain Sir Tom inspired many across the country when he walked around his garden to raise more than £30million for the NHS at the height of the pandemic during the first lockdown in 2020.

Many paid tribute via our social media pages on the day of his funeral.

Here are some of your messages:

Joan Carr: “May you now rest in peace after all your service to your country. Your determination to succeed no matter at what age is plain to see, your walking proved it for the NHS. An inspiration to everyone.”

Tricia Lilli: “Captain Sir Tom Moore inspired the whole nation through the darkest days and hours. He showed what true British spirit is. I will be honouring this great man with a drink or two and playing his number one single with Michael Ball and the NHS Choir. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”

Sarah Jane Kelly: “Such a true legend Tom Moore was, he will always be in our thoughts thinking of his family and friends.”

Richard Varcoe: “Rest in peace sir, job done, stand down.”
