Red Star's Vase dreams alive after FA confirm intention to carry on
Seaham Red Star’s hopes of reaching the last 32 of the FA Vase for the first time since 1982 remain alive after the Football Association revealed their intention to carry on with this season’s competition.
The Ebac Northern League season was brought to a premature end when the governing body confirmed their decision to curtail league fixtures for clubs in steps three to six of the non-league system.
However, Mark Collingwood’s side could still see competitive action between now and May thanks to the governing body’s commitment to carry on with Vase ties “on the basis that the road map is implemented as set out by the Government earlier this week”.
Red Star’s dreams of continuing their historic run looked over when they fell to an agonising penalty shootout defeat in their third round tie at North Ferriby over Christmas – but the tie is to be replayed after the Northern Counties League club were found to have fielded an ineligible player.
Should that tie take place, the winners of the rearranged tie will host two-time Vase finalists West Auckland Town for a place in the last 16 of the competition.
In a communication sent to all clubs still participating in the Vase, the FA said: “Further to the announcement from The FA today, we
write to confirm that it is the intention that the Buildbase FA Vase shall continue, on the basis that the road map is implemented as set out by the Government earlier this week.
“We are currently liaising with the relevant parties with regards to a revised schedule for the Competition and will communicate this along with other details (such as emergency Rule amendments or modifications) as soon as these have been finalised.
“Please note that due to time limitations, the Competition will resume at the earliest opportunity (meaning that all Clubs should be prepared to resume playing FA Vase fixtures in early April) to ensure that all remaining fixtures can be played, and the Competition can be completed in its usual format.”
News is still awaited over last season’s FA Vase final between Northern League Division One rivals Hebburn Town and Consett – although both clubs are “hopeful” that their historic meeting will take place.
