Plans for the Sunderland City Runs 2021, which are due to be take place in June, are proceeding as scheduled, confirm organisers.

After discussions with Sunderland City Council, Public Health England and emergency services, Events Of The North made the decision to continue with preparations for the event to take place – although it may look and feel different to previous events.

Due to the Covid pandemic the 2020 event was cancelled.

Now organisers say they are working to ensure that the national and local Covid restrictions expected on the

event date will be fully complied with at all times.

With safety being a priority, various procedures will be put in place, including a series

of social-distancing measures and expanded timescales incorporated into the event organisation.

As a result of essential adaptations, organisers say the 2021 Sunderland City Runs will look and feel a little different to previous editions, but Events Of The North is making plans to ensure that everyone involved enjoys the opportunity to be part of the return to running events.

Gerry Taylor, director of public health and integrated commissioning at Sunderland City Council, said: "We will be working closely with the event organisers to make sure that this event is as safe as it possibly can be for all involved, subject to the national guidance in place at the time allowing it to go ahead.

"This will include social distancing and other measures to keep everyone safe as well as making sure that the event complies with all national and local guidance at the time.”

All those who had deferred entries from last year will now get the chance to run their race and organisers anticipate that many others will sign up to join them on the start line, in either the Sunderland City 5K on Saturday, June 19, and the Sunderland City 10K or Half Marathon on Sunday, June 20.

Entries are open now at www.sunderlandcity10k. com.

If anyone has any queries about a carried over entry, they should send them by email to info@eventsofthenorth.com, and the team will respond as soon as they can.

Event director Steve Cram said: “We are thrilled to be in a position to press ahead with planning for a very special weekend in Sunderland.”

A jealous Sunderland man left his ex-partner in fear after he threw a brick through her front window.

Adam Carter, 24, did so at 1am while the woman was in her bedroom with her threeyear-old son at their Sunderland home.

The attack by Carter, of Toward Road, Sunderland, on Sunday, July 26, has left his victim in fear and looking to move.

Deputy District Judge Alex Boyd jailed him for five weeks, suspended for 18 months, for what he labelled a “revenge” attack.

Prosecutor Liz McGowan told South Tyneside Magistrates’

Court: “She had been in a relationship with the defendant for about one-anda-half years.

“It ended in January

2020, there had been a few minor issues, including the defendant contacting her.

“At around 1am she was at her home address with her three-year-old son when she heard a loud bang at her front window.

“She saw that the window had been damaged by a brick.

"She was concerned for her safety and that of her son.

“She left her property and went to a neighbour’s who allowed her to call the police.

“She saw CCTV and identified Mr Carter as being the person who threw the brick. The damage was £200.”

In a victim statement read to the court, the woman said: “I don’t feel safe in my own home anymore and feel that I will have to move house because of this.”

Paul McAlindon, defending, told the court: “She told him that she had another man who had been round at the house.

“He has done this on impulse, not taking into account what may happen.”

Carter, who has a previous conviction for assaulting a former partner in 2017, pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage.

Judge Boyd also ordered him to complete up to 30 days of rehabilitation work with the Probation Service.

He was told that he must pay the woman £200 compensation.

There was also a £120 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

Careter was also made the subject of an 18-month restraining order to stay away from his victim and not to enter her street during that time.
