A Sunderland-based company is driving ahead, thanks to hydrogen becoming more popular as a vehicle fuel.

Haskel Energy Systems employs 70 people at its site in North Hylton Road, Sunderland, supplying delivery systems for the clean-energy fuel all over the world.

The firm saw its business grow by over 250% last year

– despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic – and is looking to expand capacity as it continues to grow and innovate.

It has already created eight new roles so far this year – a mixture of operational, sales and business development roles – and is planning to recruit 12 more people by the summer.

Its hydrogen refuelling stations are exported globally and sales are being fuelled by a commitment to clean energy throughout Europe and Asia by major vehicle manufacturers, governments and industry.

Stephen Learney, Haskel’s vice president and general manager, said: “Hydrogen is playing a transformative role in the clean energy transition and we poised to meet massive new demand for the infrastructure in 2021 and beyond.”

Haskel is also helping Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles become more viable in the by making available a large fleet hydrogen refuelling station (HRS) for local commercial use.

Mr Learney added: “While 2020 brought plenty of challenges, it’s also raised further awareness of climate change.

"We are proud to be making a contribution to cleaning our environment for future generations by developing clean energy transport solutions right here in Sunderland.”

Last year Haskel was awarded a key project for deploying large refuelling stations throughout the Czech Republic and also secured a significant contract to develop hydrogen refuelling systems in Western Australia.

Mr Learney added: “The recent wins reflect the global traction in hydrogen powered transport, and Haskel’s range of solutions.

"The great news for the region is that our success is driving demand for continued investment and recruiting local talent.”
