Great Scott! - Borthwick is new four-day captain at Durham CCC
Sunderland-born Scott Borthwick has been named as Durham’s new County Championship captain.
Borthwick, who made his First-Class debut for Durham in 2009 against Hampshire, has gone on to score over nine thousand runs on the First-Class stage, and returned to Durham in October after a spell with Surrey, who he joined in 2017.
He returns with 132 County Championship appearances under his belt and having played for three Championship-winning teams.
And now the 30-year-old will captain Durham, and will take to the field as skipper for the first time in one month, as Durham travel to Trent Bridge to face Nottinghamshire on April 8.
Reacting to the news, Borthwick said: “Just coming back to play for Durham again has been an amazing experience for me, so to be asked to captain the team is a huge honour.
“Leading out the Durham team has been something I’ve dreamt about since I was a kid in the academy so it’s a really special thing for me.
“The coaches and management team have been really welcoming since I re-joined the club and I’m looking forward to working closely with them.
“We’ve got an exciting group of players with lots experience and I look forward to leading the team to
success.”
Director of cricket Marcus North said: “There is no doubt Scott brings a huge amount of playing experience to the table.
“This is a great opportunity for Scott to draw upon these and transfer those experiences into a formal leadership role.
“I would also like to thank Ned Eckersley for his commitment and hard work during his time as captain since taking over the role from Cameron Bancroft (who left to join the Australian team) halfway through the 2019 season.”
As an academy and Second
XI player, Borthwick first emerged starring in the North East Premier League for Philadelphia and Tynemouth.
He went on to represent England in a single
Test, against Australia, in the 2013/14 Ashes. He also played for his country in two one-day internationals, against Ireland and India, and in one T20 international against the West Indies.
