Teenage fitness programme bounces into action

-

A pioneering fitness programme for teenagers is being delivered across Sunderland.

Community organisation Active Families North East CIC has won funding to help over 22 teenagers get active and make healthier choices.

Funding through Sunderland Council’s Washington Area Committee and Rise North East will support 10 teens from Washington while another 12 have already been selected from the Youth Almighty Project in Silksworth.

All taking part will receive a pair of Kangoo boots, recipe cards and ingredients as part of Active Families Healthy lifestyle programme, and those who complete a set number of activities will receive a Sports Direct voucher at the end.

Kelly Brougham, Operations Director at Active Families North East, said: “The online group combined with the classes and healthy eating is a real mood booster and allows the teens to stay in contact and encourage each other along the way.

“We’re the only organisation to be rolling out a programme of this kind in the North East and we’re delighted that we can offer this opportunity to young people across the city.”

The programme was initially trialled during the first lockdown and due to its success, further funding has been allocated through Rise North East and Washington Area Committee.

Clare Morley, CEO of Rise North East, said: “Physical activity is more important now than it has ever been before. “We were thrilled to support Active Families North East in successfully obtaining funding which will help them deliver the Kangaroo programme to more people in our local area.”
