STORY:

Plans to move a pit wheel back to its home in Silksworth from its current site in Washington have been backed by Sunderland City Council. A council meeting approved £17,500 towards the cost of relocating the wheel, which currently stands in the centre of Albany.

Trisha Bernstein:

Unbelievable! While I agree Silksworth folks might want their pit “gear” back, I think funds to do this should come from charitable donations or some sort of fund raising effort.

Michael Atkinson:

Yes move it back it’s a great idea. You can’t just go wiping out our history. Today’s kids need reminders of what older generations went through to give them their lifestyles they have today.

Denise Worthy: Waste of money the best place for pit wheel is a pit museum not plonked in middle of estate.

Val Brown: The Silksworth lakes/ski slope site would seem a more appropriate siting, given that was the location of the mine.

Caroline Mitchinson Lawther: How is it going to stand outside the miners’ hall? Pretty sure there is only a narrow path there, and it's a bus stop.

Kathy Stewart: What about the state of roads and pavements as a priority in spending. In some areas they are a disgrace damaging cars daily. Not to mention people having to walk on roads to avoid broken uneven pavements.

Margy James: Just keep stripping Washington why don’t ya.

Alan Burnikell: About time to, place it on the top of the ski slope or outside of the ski slope changing rooms.

Richard Chamberlain: An absolute waste of public money if I’ve ever seen it.

Mark Coulson: What a waste of money to complete this move. Pointless!

Chel Yarnell: Why would they do that!! It’s part of Albany! And all that money wasted to move what we don't want moved. Just why?

Anth Wright: Shocking!
