Drug-busting officers have sent out a “strong message” to serious and violent criminals after weapons, cash and cocaine were seized during city raids.

Police executed a warrant at a flat on Argyle Street earlier this month after receiving intelligence about drug-related criminality at the address.

The morning strike saw police seize an air weapon, two axes and a sword – along with quantities of cocaine and cannabis.

Officers also seized a number of electronic devices and a large sum of cash believed to be associated with illicit activity.

A 52-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman were both arrested on suspicion of drug supply offences and taken into custody.

The planned raids followed two separate warrants executed on High Street East and Tower Street West. More than £12,000 was seized, along with three machetes, two axes and various drug

paraphernalia.

Detective Chief Inspector Sean Mcguigan, of Northumbria Police, said: “Over the last few weeks we have acted upon vital intelligence to carry out a number of raids at properties believed to be associated with serious and violent crime.

“I am absolutely delighted with the results. We have taken thousands of pounds out of the pockets of criminal groups, along with a weapons haul capable of inflicting significant harm.

“This positive activity is just the latest in our ongoing crackdown against serious and violent crime under the banner of Operation Sentinel – and we hope this sends out a strong message to criminals in our city.

“I’d like to thank all the officers involved in this recent activity, as well as the public for their ongoing support and cooperation. By working together, we will continue to ensure Sunderland remains a safe place to live and work.”

Two men arrested during the raids on High Street East and Tower Street West remain under investigation with inquiries ongoing into the seizures.
