Award-winning pub given extra hours for booze
An award-winning pub has been given permission to extend the hours it can sell alcohol.
The Three Horseshoes, in Leamside, has been given the green light to allow sales as late as 12.30am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
But boss es Durham County Council decided against granting the full range of changes to the existing terms of the venue’ s licence requested, keeping the existing cut off at midnight Monday-Thursday.
Concerns about the later operating times had been raised by West Rainton Parish Council.
Landlord Daryl Frankland, who told licensing chiefs the proposals were intended to aid the business’ s planned expansion into bed and breakfast rooms, also indicated he would be prepared to accept the current terms during the week.
“We’re a public house, not an off-licence as you would imagine an off-licence to be,” he said.
“Weaskedforanoff-licence because we will sell beer to be taken away by people, such as [ caravanner s or campers] who may have lunch and then want to take a couple of beers home.
“We’re also heavily into real ale, we’ve run the CAMRA North East Pub of the Year award, we’ve got our own microbrewery and we often get people asking if they can take our beer home.”
Mr Frankland, who also runs the Courtyard bar at Washington Arts Centre, was speaking at a meeting of the county council’s Statutory Licensing Sub-Committee.
A request to allow recorded music to start on the premises from 7am was also accepted, which Mr Frankland said would help him ‘stay on the right side of the law’ by playing music or news broadcasts while guests have their breakfast.
