Wearmouth Old Boys prove too strong for Stag & Monkey

Wearmouth CW Old Boys returned to Sunderland & District Over-40s League Division Two action with a 2-0 home win against Hartlepool Stag & Monkey.

The home side took the lead on the hour when a long ball over the top caught the Stagdefenc­eappealing­invain for offside.

Stag threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser but it wasthehost­swholooked­more likely to score on the counter, and Colin Smith twice bailed out the visitors with superb saves. He was beaten in the final seconds though when a shotwasdef­lectedpast­himto seal the win.

Sunderland Willow Pond bagged a 3-2 Division Four home win against Houghton Burn Hotel.

Houghton Burn took the lead from a counter attack through Sean McArdle, who collected the ball and skilfully beat two defenders, his half volley between them from outside the box givingPond­keeperAndy­Tilbury

no chance.

In the second half, Willow equalised after midfielder David Laws played it wide to Stuart McKie, his cross come shot was dropped by Burn keeper Reid and Ralph Dodd was hand to tap the ball home.

Pond’s McKie fired in a ball across the box and Dodd slotted home to take the lead, 2-1.

The lead was short lived

however after Willow lost possession in midfield, the ball was played inside to Andy Colledge and he blasted the ball home.

Pond went ahead after a long ball up field from McKie, Tones headed inside to Laws who did well to pick out Dodd at far post who scored from a tightangle,completing­hishattric­k and Pond the win.

Rolls Royce drew 2-2 ay HoughtonCr­icketandto­okadvantag­e first with a goal either sideofhalf­timethroug­hGavin Evans and Lee Steel.

Houghton levelled through Steve Mitchell’s freekick and Hugh Daglish’s goalmouth scramble.

Penshaw Catholic Club earned a 2-1 home win in the Premier Division

against Wallsend Boys Club, while Hartlepool Workies, lost 3-0 at Ferryhill.
