A former County Court in Sunderland is set to be developed into a 45-bed student accommodation after the building was sold to a construction contractor.
The former law courts on John Street in Sunderland are to be extended and redeveloped after planning permission was approved.
Sendrig Construction, who are based in Newcastle, have purchased the building, which was originally built in 1876.
The three-storey, Grade 2 listed building is located in the Sunniside area of the city and was the former Sunderland County Court and Family Court.
Avison Young, acting on behalf of HM Courts and Tribunals Service, secured the sale of the former law courts to Sendrig Construction.
Tony Wordsworth, Director of Avison Young, Newcastle said: “We are delighted to have secured the conclusion of the sale to Sendrig Construction for our client which should secure the future and continued occupation of such an important and historic building in the heart of Sunderland.”
Sendrig Construction is now looking for a partner to work with on the property.
Michael Lee, Director, Sendrig Construction said: ” We are delighted to finally complete our purchase and be the proud new owners of the old law courts in Sunderland.
A beautiful listed building with many unique features and characteristics which we will bring back to their former glory.
"We have full planning permission to convert the building to a 45-bedroom student accommodation facility and will now actively seek a partner to work with on this fantastic opportunity.”
