10-man Acre Rigg edged out on penalties by Downhill Free Gardeners

In the Durham County Sunday Cup third preliminar­y round, Peterlee Acre Rigg SC dug deep before losing on penalties against Sunderland Downhill Free Gardeners Arms and having played most of the tie with 10 men.

David Taylor was shown a straight red card for squaring up to the visitors centre-back having been the recipient of a two-footed tackle.

Already 1-0 down Rigg equalized when skipper Greg O’Brien netted from the spot and soon after another penalty from Chris Wright saw them lead. Despite Downhill equalizing through Jones, Wright replied. Another penalty from Jones saw the game back to 3-3 and it was Downhill who won the shoot out 4-3 to reach the first round proper.

An effort from Joe Spalding was not enough for Peterlee Helford United as they lost 2-1 to Coxhoe Red Lion.

In the First Round, Peterlee Catholic Club lost 3-1 to Sunderland Stella Dons, with Reece Kenney their scorer.

Jordan Garside and Steven Ashman netted for Easington Lane WMC as they beat South Shields Hedworth Hall, while Easington CIU lost 5-4 on penalties at Norton George & Dragon.

In the SSK Recruitmen­t Peterlee & District Sunday League Premier Division, second-placed Dawdon Welfare Park hammered Easington Southside 13-0, Danni Layer netting five while Robbie Bird and Jack Walker hit hat-tricks and Denver Morris and Niall Crosby completed the scoring.

Division One leaders H or den JD’s Bar sub David Paul hit a hat-trick and a brace from Kyle Johns saw them beat Win gate How den 5-1.

A brace from Jordan Williams plus an effort from sub Jack Maskell netted for second-placed Easington Leather Cap whereas Andrew Elliott and Michael Ambler replied for Sherburn United.

Peterlee Hearts won 3-2 against Seaham Parkside thanks to goals from Michael Coates, Connor Jackson and Jordan Stephenson, Michael Kennedy and Billy Chisholm replying for Parkside.

Goals from Marc Taylor, Lewis Wilkinson, Con nor Patterson and Tom Hudson paved the way for Seaham Marlboroug­h to take a 4-1 win over Seaham the Knack whose reply came from Glen Hardie.

In Division Two, Philip Robinson netted six times for Horden Legion in their 8-1 trouncing against East Durham FSS, Easington Victory had a 7-0 win over H or den United thanks to Lewis Miller’ s four goals.
