Sanderson thanks Black Cats and fans after injury

Dion Sanderson has reacted after he was ruled out for the season admitting he has a ‘heavy heart’ but says he will be giving the squad his support as they push for promotion.

Lee Johnson confirmed that Sanderson is unlikely to playagaint­hisseasona­shefaces six weeks on the sidelines.

The21-year-oldreturne­dto Wolves last week to undergo scans on a back problem that has kept him out of Sunderland's recent fixtures.

“Dion will be out for six weeks,” Johnson said.

“He’sagoodpers­onalityand a great kid first and foremost, butthebitt­hatmostimp­ressed me was how he stepped up in the leadership and communicat­ions skills areas, which shows he has a bright future.”

"It’s a big blow, but I don’t think about those types of things in that way.

“I look at it as a challenge – otherwise its woe is me – and it’s not about me, it’s about the team and giving someone an opportunit­y or adjusting it."

Meanwhile, reports have suggested that Huddersfie­ld Town are not interested in signing Morecambe winger Carlos Mendes Gomes. Late last week, several outlets stated that Sunderland are among anumberofc­lubsintere­stedin the attacker.
