Barriers removed from busiest streets

Social distancing barriers which were placed along some of Sunderland’s busiest streets as part of Covid restrictions have been removed.

The barriers were put in place to widen footpaths and allow pedestrians more space to distance themselves from each other, in line with Department for Transport and Central Government advice during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The red and white barriers in High Street West and Fawcett Street have already been removed with footpaths returning to normal.

It comes as the latest round of restrictions are lifted meaning the barriers, which were located at High Street West, Holmeside and Vine Place, Houghton Centre, Sea Road and outside Central Train Station, can be removed.

The remaining barriers will be taken away later in the week – either in the evenings and over weekends for safety reasons and to minimise disruption.

Leader of Sunderland City Council, Coun Graeme Miller, said: "As the latest easing of restrictions comes into effect and we see more businesses welcoming back customers, we will also see our streets return to normal.

"Removing these barriers is just one more step towards life returning to normal and it is fantastic to see people out and about once again. However, we must remember that the virus is still in circulation and continue to follow the guidance in place to keep us all safe."

The latest set of restrictions were lifted on Monday, allowing pubs and restaurants to reopen indoors.
