The costly DIY mistakes to avoid making throughout your home!

-

As spring is in full swing you may be thinking about tackling those DIY jobs that you have been putting off.

But Brits tackling home renovations are being warned about the most costly DIY mistakes they should avoid making.

The money team at NetVoucherCodes.co.uk have researched and revealed five things to consider to make sure DIY projects go smoothly and don’t end up costing more than they should.

Although it may seem counterintuitive at first, families should never scrimp on DIY materials. Though they might end up paying more on the proper kit to start with, this will lessen the chance of anything going wrong or needing to be replaced soon after the job’s finished. And prep work should never be overlooked.

A spokesperson for NetVoucherCodes.co.uk said: “As a team, we’re passionate about helping people save money, both day to day and when it comes to bigger projects like redecorating or renovating.

“Doing jobs like this yourself can save you a fortune compared to paying a professional, but there are things to watch out for if you want to avoid having to spend more money in the future fixing problems.”

1 Using poor quality materials. As the proverb goes, ‘buy cheap, buy twice’.

2 Failing to get proper planning permission. If you want to make a big change to your property, such as building an extension or converting your loft, it’s essential to make sure you receive proper permission from the council first.

3 Skimping on surface prep work. When it comes to painting, most of your time and effort should go to surface preparation, whether you’re refinishing furniture, staining kitchen cabinets or repainting your living room. There is a very good reason for this – it determines the final quality, as well as the durability of your paint job.

4 Approximating. Whatever you do, don’t ever try and guess how much of something you need, and if you’re cutting something to size, measure, measure and measure again.

5 Dabbling in areas you shouldn’t. To avoid retelling a DIY horror story of half destroyed walls, inhaling toxic fumes or electric sparks flying, you should always seek professional help when dealing with demolitions, electrical work, and asbestos. Plumbing and roofing is also a no-go, as well as gas work.
