30-goal Wyke happy to win Supporters’ accolade
Sunderland’s 30-goal ace Charlie Wyke has been crowned the Supporters’ Player of the Year.
Wyke says he has ‘loved every minute’ of this season, with Sunderland embraced in a play-off shoot-out with Lincoln City , with Wyke starring under Lee Johnson after he replaced Phil Parkinson.
The striker has hit 30 goals in 52 appearances so far including two hat-tricks against AFC Wimbledon and Doncaster Rovers.
The 28-year-old also became the first Sunderland player since Kevin Phillips in 1999-2000 to score 30 goals in a single season.
Reacting to the news, Wyke said: “I’m delighted to receive the award.
"It’s been a good season for myself, but I couldn’t have done it without the lads.
"The head coach came in and played the way I like, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”
Jim Gilling, chair of the Branch Liaison Council, said: “On behalf of our supporters, it gives us great pleasure in asking Lee Johnson to present the Supporters’ Player of the Year award to Charlie Wyke.
"It is fantastic to see a striker, who has scored 30 goals in all competitions this season, win this award.
"He has scored some great goals and he fully deserves this recognition – and let’s hope his total increases further during our play-off campaign.”
Wyke was nominated for the Sky Bet League One Player of the Season award alongside George Honeyman and Jonson Clarke-Harris.
While also being named in the Sky Bet League One Team of the Season, which also included Aiden McGeady, Luke O’Nien and Lee Burge.
