Pupils given a lesson in outdoor adventure
School pupils in Sunderland have been getting used to being back in class – thanks to some outdoor adventure lessons.
More than 90 youngsters at Redby Academy, in Fulwell Road, Roker, visited Moor House Outdoor Adventure Centre, in West Rainton, where a climbing wall – and trees – proved to be a big hit with the youngsters.
The trips, over two days, were aimed at improving the pupils’ teamwork skills – and also included building outdoor shelters.
Deputy head Jill Carroll, said: “The climbing wall proved to be a big hit with
the youngsters and teachers were most impressed by the all-round determination to reach the top.
"Their teamwork skills
were also well tested during the shelter building activity.”
She added: “These were our first school trips for over a year.
"The children have had a fantastic time.”
Rachael Simpson, middle leader at the school, said: “It was great to see the excitement on the faces of the children as they climbed off the bus at Moor House.
"It was great to see children being children and having fun exploring the woods with their classmates.
Over the remainder of the summer term, all pupils at Redby Academy, from Year 1 to Year 6, will visit Moor House to take part in a similar experience.
Head teacher, Melanie Wight, said that, after two very disrupted years, it filled her with pride to hear the children talk about the trip with enthusiasm.
She added: “That’s how children should be.”
