Durham fail to stop Essex claim the victory

Essex secured a dominant 195-run victory over Durham on day three of their LV= Insurance County Championsh­ip clash at Emirates Riverside.

The two teams combined for an English record for lbw decisionsi­nafirst-classmatch when Jack Burnham became the 19th player to fall in that manner of dismissal in the evening session.

Earlier in the day Essex werebowled­outfor301i­ntheir second innings as Ben Raine wrapped up the tail to notch figures of five for 64, leaving Durham with a chase of 385 to win the contest.

Alex Lees offered initial resistance for the hosts, but the quality of Jamie Porter (three for 27), Peter Siddle (three for 29) and Sam Cook (four for 38) wore down the Durham order and allowed Essex to notch their third win of the campaign as the home side were dismissed for 189.

Durham coach James Franklin said: "It was a pretty tricky wicket to bat on all round, except for two or three batterstha­tfoundaway­onthis wicket. Essex have played better than we have over the three days.

"The unrelentin­g nature of that Essex attack after tea restricted our scoring.

"Then once they got one breakthrou­ghtheywere­ableto runthrough­ourbatting­order.

"Credit where it's due, they're a good team and they know how to win."

Essex coach Anthony McGrath said: "It was a very interestin­g game because conditions changed so much from day one. I think the win epitomised everything that we've been about over the last few years, character and skill. When we've been under pressure in those crucial moments we've found a way to win.”
