Cameron is in seventh heaven after smashing 5km PB record

Houghton Harrier Cameron Allan could not have chosen a better venue than the first Manchester Invitation­al Athletics meeting to impress UKA officials.

With the event being streamed live by Athletics Weekly, the Under-23 won the 5000m and he was rewarded for his superb victory by smashing his previous best for the distance.

He chopped a massive 50 seconds off his previous fastest time and moved up to seventh on the UK Under-23 ranking list with his 14.05.12 clocking for the 12 and a half laps.

The Saint Mary’s University­student never showed at the front of the race until he kicked for home down the home straight and powered away from Ireland’s Connor Bradley (14.06.10) and Mahamed Mahamed of Southampto­n (14.08.15).

Allan’s 5000m time was his third PB of the month, having recorded a 1.54.6 800m and 8.07.73 3000m. But it is not only Allan that is in top form for Hough ton Harriers, as his club mate Henry Johnson Is also in record breaking form.

Competing in the British Milers Grand Prix at Sport City the Under -20 dipped under 1.49 for the first time in finishing second in the Brace with his 1.48.72 clocking to achieve a European Junior Standard and third place in the UK rankings.

In the 1500 mA race, Sunderland Harrier Michael Wilson finished 12 th and last (3.51.55) in a time well outside his best (3.43.19).

Hesaid:“Iover-trainedabi­t the week of the race and never fully recovered from Loughborou­gh race.

"I was in trouble after first 200 meters and pretty much just ran it in over the final 600 metres. I’m going to race two more 800s and will try and PB in both, including British Champs heats, and will then get myself back insome1500­m/ mile races once I'm sharper.''

Sunderland Harrier Liam Taylor has been enjoying his trips to Northumber­land after winning two Run Nation events in the space of two weeks. He beat his great rival, Gateshead Harrier Conrad F ranks by four seconds to win the Kirk hall Capability Brown10k race by four seconds (36.57).

Taylor returned to Northumber­land for the Run Northumber­land Alnwick Castle Trail race which he won by nearly a minute from Penicuik Harrier Adam Gray (35.33). Taylor won in 34.34 and his club mate Sam T hurl beck was ninth (38.12). Taylor also ra nina midweek race in, finishing second (33.11) to Middlesbro­ugh's Gregory Jayasuriya (32.32) in the Wynyard Hall 10k.

There was a good run from Under-17 Sunderland Harrier Adam Hughes, who finished seventh in 37.09.

Unfortunat­ely, he was not credited with the performanc­e as his father mistakenly wore his number and it was Andrew who was down in the results as seventh instead of 20th.

Sunderland Harriers Craig Gunn and Michael Barker had impressive performanc­es in the Middlesbro­ugh Endeavour 10k on Bank Holiday Monday.

Gunn finished seventh in PB of 33.31 to chop 14 seconds of his previous best and Over-40 Barker was ninth with 34.42.

The surprise package of the race was the entry of Kenyan star Mary Ngugi, a 66.29 half marathon runner, who beat all the men to win in personal best of 30.50. She beat Otley’s S cot Harrington by 20 seconds with Middlesbro­ugh’ s Gregory Jayasuriya third in 32.26.

Billingham Marsh House Harrier Liam Aldridge was the first winner of the Gateshead Half Marathon recording0­1.08.04 to win by over four minutes.
