Join heavy metal knitters for online global title bid

-

It sounds an unlikely combination but knitting and heavy metal music has really caught on, culminating in an annual Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship.

This blast of an event makes a return on July 9 with an online competition that anyone can apply to and attend. The first Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship in July 2019 was an instant hit, met with great enthusiasm by a global audience.

It got noticed world wide, and video clips from the event spread rapidly through social media, accruing hundreds of millions of views.

Who would have known that heavy metal music and headbanging combined with knitting would bring together people from around the world and develop a multinational community of heavy metal knitters!

This year the Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship makes a return with a 100 per cent online event that everyone can watch, and all heavy metal knitters can apply to as competitors.

Mari Karjalainen from the organising company said: “Now more than ever, the world needs entertainment, joy, laughter, craziness and surprising experiences!

“This year’s Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship is an ultimate combination of all this brought straight to your internet connected devices as the event will be held online and is available world wide for everyone to join the experience.

“The fun will be available safely and on budget”.

The application period for the first ever online event is open now until June 13 at www.heavymetalknitting. com site.

Twelve best video performances will compete for the title of Heavy Metal Knitting World Champion in the grand final on July 9.

Just one of the uniquely crazy performances will be crowned for 2021.

Mari Karjalainen added: “Based on the 2019 World Championships you should expect surprising, unique and gorgeously crazy performances.

“We will witness the friends of knitting and heavy metal music to be reborn in their performances, bringing creative madness alive and sending joy to all.

“We have witnessed that combining handcrafts and music this way brings people together and conveys new ways in which to express yourself.

“It’s like a language of its own and we want to make it available for everyone”.

There are over 50 heavy metal bands per 100,000 Finnish citizens and hundreds of thousands of knitting hobbyists, but it seems that there are plenty of metalhead knitters outside of Finland too.

Heavy Metal Knitting was coined as a term during a long, dark winter in Joensuu, Finland, in 2018, by a journalist in a radio interview covering local handcrafts professionals.

The idea gathered pace quickly, leading to the phenomenon that gave rise to The Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship, due to take place on July 9, starting at 6pm Finnish time.

The application period to the 2021 competition ends on June 13 and anyone aged over 18 years is eligible to apply and join in the fun.
