City man dies after being hit by minibus

A man who died after being hit by a minibus in Burmantoft­s, Leeds, has been named by police.

Sunderland man Colin Penman, aged 44, was killed after being hit by a a silver Ford Tourneo minibus while walking on Beckett Street on Friday, May 28.

It happened at around 12.30am.

Mr Penman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dalsooz Hussain, 49, from Leeds, appeared at Leeds Magistrate­s Court on Monday May 31 charged with causing death by careless driving and causing death whilst driving a motor vehicle unlicenced and uninsured.

He was remanded in custody at the hearing.

He will next appear before Leeds Crown Court on June 28.

A police vehicle had stopped at the scene immediatel­y prior to the crash occurring.

A referral was made to the Independen­t Office for Police Conduct due to the presence of officers.

The IOPC has declared an independen­t investigat­ion in relation to the incident which will run parallel to the West Yorkshire Police criminal investigat­ion.

Detective Inspector Paul Conroy of the Major Collision and Enquiry Team, said: “We are continuing to investigat­e this collision which tragically resulted in the death of Mr Penman and are appealing for further witnesses to come forwards.
