Let’s not fall at the final Covid-19 hurdle
“We have worked too hard to fall at the final hurdle.” That’s the message from our health chiefs after a rise in the number of delta variant cases of coronavirus across the region.
Council leaders on the LA7 – which represents Sunderland and neighbouring authorities of South Tyneside, Durham, Northumberland. Gateshead, North Tyneside and Newcastle, have reported that the region now has 149 cases of the delta variant, representing an increase of 68 on the previous week. The news comes as a further reminder that the battle to stop the spread of Covid remains very much ongoing. And while surge testing and surge vaccinations have been introduced in those areas most affected, we are all again being reminded of the importance in following the medical advice to try and prevent what are being described as “small, controlled outbreaks” from taking hold.
Having the ability to get out and about again and to socialise with friends and family was the result of the hard work done by everyone to help get case rates down.
The emergence of a new mutation of the virus is a concern. And while the region is now thankfully seeing fewer hospitalisations, experts in our local authorities insist we still cannot afford to take things for granted.
That’s why they are calling on those yet to have either their first or second vaccination to come forward and receive them.
As we approach June 21 and a decision on what happens next on the Roadmap, following the rules remains vital. The last thing anyone wants is to find themselves experiencing another lockdown.
