Gateshead player-manager Mike Williamson is ready to bide his time as he looks to build on an impressive start to his summer transfer business.

Williamson’s former Newcastle United teammate Adam Campbell was first through the door at the International Stadium, following his departure from National League North rivals Darlington.

More attacking threat was added days later when former Hebburn Town and Carlisle United striker Cedwyn Scott agreed to join the Heed.

The transfer activity continued with a double signing earlier this week as former Gateshead favourite Robbie Tinkler returned to the club and Sunderland youngster Ryan Wombwell put pen to paper on a two-year deal as he looks for his first experience of senior football.

There is still business to be done with a goalkeeper and a left-sided defender believed to be high on Williamson’s list of priorities ahead of the new season.

However, theformerMagpies defender insisted he will show patience to ensure he brings ‘the right player and the right personality’ into a tight-knit dressing room.

“Everyone is after goalscorers, so it’s a tough market out there,” the 37-year-old told The Echo.

“From day one, since we have come in, we had a list of targets and we have missed out on them.

“But this summer, we have got our main targets in that area of the pitch and are thoroughly delighted to have go them in.

“We have done a lot of early business which has been really good.

“Mainly we have retained the majority of the lads from last year and that was our main concern.

“We still have a number of positions we are looking

to fill, but it’s early doors in the summer.

“We know there will be plenty of opportunities that will crop up, especially in these difficult times.

“For us, it’s really a case of biding our time and getting the right player and the right

personality into the squad.”

Williamson’s side will kick off their preparations for the 2021/22 National League North season with a visit to newly promoted Northern Premier League East Division club Hebburn Town, on Tuesday, July 6.
