Grant gives bowling club a new lease of life

-

New Herrington Bowling Club have received some good news after Sunderland City Council awarded them a £2,000 grant from the Community Chest Fund.

The club is extremely grateful to the council, and to CouncillorSped ing, from the S hi ney Row ward, and Councillor McDonough, from the St Chads ward, for sponsoring the application.

The grant is intended to assist in developing the club by encouraging new members and the purchase of vital equipment. The club has already started that process by purchasing rink accessories such as numbers and ditch markers.

It is the club's intention to improve the locker room by removing the existing lockers and replacing them with modern units.

They are also looking at zip up jackets and possibly new kit. The club will be replacing the mats as well.

So things are looking very positive for the bowling club and they have every reason to look to the future with optimism.

This time last year the club faced the very real possibility of closing down, but the new committee have turned the club around, they now boast a membership approaching 40.

They are particularly pleased with the number of younger members joining which they are confident will stand them in good stead in next year’s league competitions.

This year they are actively participating in The Earl Cup, The Swan Cup, The Harold Howey Trophy and The Storey Bowl. This is a far cry from two years ago when they struggled to raise a team.
