Keep on running is the GNR message

-

Dig out your running shoes – and keep training!

That’s the message all joggers around Wearside and the wider region will be happy to hear from Great North Run organisers in the surest sign yet that this year’s event will happen.

Plans for a 40th anniversary celebration of arguably the world’s mostloved half marathon had to be postponed last year because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

But it is now hoped those belated celebrations can take place on Sunday, September 12, and that the many thousands or runners taking part can do so in a covid-safe environment.

Run organisers say they are confident that, barring another national lockdown, this year’s event will take place and that entrants should continue their preparations.

The return of the run will also provide a huge boost to both the North East economy and the charity sector, which hugely benefits from thousands running for worthy causes. Indeed, Great North Run founder Sir Brendan said that around £27million was raised for 600 charities across the UK when it was last held compared to £5million raised from the 2020 virtual event.

The run is firmly fixed on the North East sporting and social calendar. It is something that thousands of Wearsiders enjoy taking part in each year and the whole region can be rightly proud of what has become a real institution.

So get out those trainers and lace them up. And, if the run does return, then the very best of luck to all!
