MP supports his party’s pledge to ‘back Britain’

Easington MP Grahame Morris has backed a party pledge to make, buy and sell more in Britain under a Labour government.

Labour plans to raise standards, award more public contracts to British businesses and bring the jobs of the future to the UK by using social and environmental clauses in public contracts – an approach taken in other countries including France and the US.

Mr Morris said: “As we recover from the pandemic, we have a chance to seize a range of new opportunities and shape a new future for Britain and East Durham.

“In the Easington constituency there is so much potential to build to jobs of tomorrow in manufacturing, engineering and the green economy.

“Labour will get those sectors and our economy firing on all cylinders by giving people new skills for the jobs of the future here in the UK, bringing security and resilience back to our economy and public services, and helping our high streets thrive again.”

The plans involve getting public bodies to give more contracts to British firms, legislation requiring public bodies to report on how much they are buying from British businesses, putting the growth of local industries first, and reviewing the pipeline of all major infrastructure projects to explore how to increase the materials made in Britain.

The plans also include reshoring jobs and working with colleges and universities to make sure people are being trained in the skills and apprenticeships required for the kind of jobs which will be required in the future.
