Preece assisting Cats’ keeper coaching
Former Sunderland goalkeeper David Preece has been part of the club’s pre-season training camp in Scotland.
Preece, who has previously coached in Sweden with O st er sunds and with Lincoln City, worked with the Black Cats’ senior goalkeepers this week following the departure of goal keeping coach Lee Butler.
Having come through the academy ranks on Wearside, the stopper later enjoyed a fine senior career with the likes of Darlington, Aberdeen and Barnsley. He has since established himself as a highlyregarded goalkeeping coach, with his most recent post coming in Scandinavia.
It is understood that the arrangement is purely a shortterm one, with the club set to undergo a thorough recruitment process to identify a replacement to work with Lee Burge, Anthony Patterson and Jacob Carney.
Butler left the club last week to reunite with Phil Parkinson at National League side Wrexham, where he also teams-up with former Sunderland assistant manager Steve Parkin.
*Sunderland’s transfer team are closing in on a deal for Middlesbrough defender Andrew Nelson, according to reports.
The Wear side-born 18- year old Black Cats supporting player joined the Teessiders eight years ago having featured for a number of junior clubs in his home city.
But the allure of Taylor’s boyhood team will prove too good an opportunity to turn down with the player likely to feature for Sunderland’ s youth teams as his development continues. The centre-back appeared 20 times in the Under-18 version of the Premier League fo rB oro last campaign, but is now close to making the move to the Academy of Light.
