STORY

The sale of new petrol and diesel vans and lorries will banned from 2040 as part of an ambitious plan to decarbonise transport in the UK by the midcentury.

Barry Jackson: Never going to happen. There will be a big U turn at some point. Can you really see the government losing out on all that fuel Duty. Looks at when the pushed people into diesel cars 12 years ago. Now diesels are bad. They’ll find a reason to move us again.

Phil Russell: They will just find a way to tax the electric or introduce toll roads everywhere. Agree that they can’t just let the fuel duty evaporate.

Michael Forster: We will need to build new power stations with the amount of electrical cars and vans on the road.

Robert Duke: What does this government aim to do, without them how is shipments going to be transported throughout the UK.

Richard Lees: Waste of time unless China, India and the USA do the same.

Robert Barrow: Will this mean More Nuclear power stations to be built to meet the demands for more electricity.

David Wheelhouse: Another white elephant.

Doug Wrightson: Imagine an electric truck idling in a 6 mile tailback in this heat, with his aircon going. He long will the batteries last.

Phil Smurthwaite: Never going to work.

Glen Woodhouse: Whilst China and India continue to build coal fired power stations.

Allison Lamb: Good luck with that one.

Kieran Davison: Why are the government not offering incentives to scrap older petrol and diesel cars also it’s not just new vehicles to blame and ask people to turn to electric.

Darren Maynard: The government have already said they'll massively increase road tax on petrol/diesel cars and it will increase year on year until it becomes unaffordable to own one.
