-

Farringdon Detached were unable to get their Wearside League campaign off to a winning start as they fell to a 5-3 defeat at Richmond Town.

Callum Nichol, Stan Ogunsyi and Perri Agnew were on target for Li am Lay’ s side at the Dave Clark Arena – but they could not prevent their hosts from claiming all three points.

Lay delivered an honest assessment of Farringdon’s performance in what he described as a game that was “men against boys”.

He told The Echo: “I think we were the better side in the first-half, but in the secondhalf it was all about them and they deserved their way.

“It was men against boys to be honest with you and we didn’t deserve to win the game.”

Lay did take some positives from the opening day defeat as new signings Kieran Whitehead and Callum Nichol both made impressive de but sat the Dave Clark Arena.

“The two new lads were very good for us,” explained the Farringdon boss.

“Callum Nichol scored a great goal and Kieran Whitehead was our man of the match in my opinion.

“I was pleased with both of them.”

Wolviston took the honours in the only other Division One fixture on the opening day of the season as Jake S tot t’ s late goal was the difference as they saw off a determined and dogged display from West Auckland Tunns.
