Kids hit for six with £1k boost
Young cricketers in Sunderland have received a £1,000 boost from a house building firm.
Philadelphia Cricket Club, in Houghton – which has a squadofaround90juniorplayers–istoreceivethecashfrom the Persimmon Homes Building Futures initiative.
Launched in partnership with Team GB, the British Olympic Association the schemeaimstoinvest£1msupportingunder18sintheregion.
Malcolm Pratt, club president and chairman, said: “Our aim is to promote cricket among young boys and girls, improve their skills but also develop them as good people. We believe that sport, particularly cricket, provides a great opportunity for youngsters.”
The Building Futures scheme aims to support community groups working with under-18s in three categories – education and arts, health and sport.
Richard Cook, managing director for Persimmon Homes Durham, said: “Young people are at the heart of all our futures, and we are fortunate to be able to provide support to them.
“We will make donations from £1,000 to £100,000 to grass roots sports groups, charities dealing with physical and mental health issues, as well as community arts and education projects. As we emerge from the global pandemic, we believe that now more than ever we need to look after the health and wellbeing of our communities.”
A total of 128 grants of £1,000 will be awarded across Persimmon’s 32 regional businesses and three initiatives will go onto win £100,000 each through an online public vote.
