Horse racing has a long and distinguished history and has been practised in civilisations across the world since ancient times.
Chariot racing was one of the most popular ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine sports – think Ben Hur!
In later times, Thoroughbred racing became, and remains, popular with aristocrats and royalty of British society, earning it the title Sport of Kings.
The Queen breeds and races horses and regularly attends, coronavirus permitting, Ascot with the June meeting at the course known as Royal Ascot. Ladies’ Day at Ascot is famous for the fashions, particularly the hats.
Cheltenham Racecourse, home of one of most famous jump meets, is surprisingly absent from the top ten.
