Graydon left to rue poor display as West End crash out of Vase
Sunderland West End jointmanager Keith Graydon was left disappointed by his side’s FA Vase exit at the hands of Cleator Moor Celtic.
West End took a narrow lead into half-time as goals from Lewis Charlton and Graydon sandwiched an equaliser from Tom Mahone – but it was the Cumbrians that progressed thanks to secondhalf goals by Jordan Little and Liam Johnston.
Graydon reflected on a poor performance from his side saying: “It was disappointing and we never really got going. It was just one of those games, it’s disappointing and it’s a chance gone to get a bit of a run. It’s done now, we have to move on from that and focus on our league game at Redcar Town on Tuesday."
Sunderland RCA suffered a shock home defeat against Vase debutants Redcar Town.
An equaliser from RCA defender Simon Jakab looked to have forced the tie into a penalty shoot-out after the visitors had taken a first-half lead through Scott Howes.
But an injury-time strike from Danny Thompson ensured RCA’s Vase run fell at the first hurdle.
Easington Colliery saw off higher-level opposition as Jack Devlin and Liam Adamson netted in their 2-1 home win against Northern League Division One side Redcar Athletic, while Chester-le-Street Town claimed a 3-1 penalty shoot-out win to see off Division Two rivals Jarrow.
A Dan Wilson hat-trick inspired 2015 Vase winners North Shields to a 4-0 win at Padiham – but the competition’s most successful club saw their run ended by a surprise home defeat as fourtime
winners Whitley Bay fell to a 4-3 loss against Billingham Synthonia.
Two Lewis Murphy goals helped Bishop Auckland recover from two goals down and claim a 15-14 win in a
marathon penalty shoot-out against Ryton & Crawcrook Albion.
And West Allotment Celtic survived the 12-yard lottery with a 4-3 shoot-out win after they had played their part in
a remarkable 10-goal draw against Steeton.
Heaton Stannington and Newton Aycliffe came through shoot-outs in their respective ties at Newcastle University and Campion.
Crook Town lost 2-0 at home to Eccleshill United, while an Adam Storey brace and a Ryan Cummings goal helped Willington to a win by the odd goal in five against Tow Law Town.
