Wright's the hero as Silksworth earn victory in United ‘dogfight’
Silksworth CW manager Jamie Cole lauded his players after they edged a narrow home win against in-form Chester-le-Street United.
Joe Jones got the only goal of a tight, hard-fought game as Silksworth moved into the top eight of the Wearside League table with a second consecutive league win.
Cole described the game as ‘a dogfight’ and praised goalkeeper Jak Wright for a fine display which was influential in helping his side to the win.
He said: “The game was very similar to the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup tie at their place last weekend.
“We expected Chester to have a lot of the ball and we set up to deal with that.
“We dragged them into a dogfight, which we know they don’t like.
“Jak has pulled off some brilliant saves, as did their keeper, and it’s taken a bullet of a header to seal the points.
“My lads ran themselves into the ground, and deserved their win.”
Gateshead Leam Rangers moved top of the table as substitute Liam McVicar scored the only goal of the game in their win at Shotton Colliery.
Windscale romped to a fourth consecutive win as an own-goal and strikes from Reece Fretwell, Lewis Jolly and Matt Frazer helped them to a 4-0 home triumph against Coxhoe Athletic.
Durham Corinthians were also big winners on Saturday, as they eased to all three
points in their home game against Wolviston.
Substitute Cameron Arthurs led the way with a hattrick and there was a goal apiece for Kieron Richardson and Michael Ross as Dean
Smith’s side claimed a 5-1 win at New Ferens Park.
James Stanger had put Wolviston ahead just before the half-hour mark, but a Decklin Moss red card five minutes before half-time allowed
their hosts to take control of the game.
Darlington RA and FC Hartlepool came through Monkwearmouth Charity Cup first round ties on Saturday with big wins.
RA romped to a 9-2 win at Annfield Plain as Owen Fawcett, Jonathan Hope, Phil Caley, Will Hewson and Stephen Cheeseman all found the net for the visitors at Derwent Park.
FC Hartlepool were worthy winners at Norton & Stockton Ancients as a Lewis Porritt brace and a goal apiece from Luke Naylor and substitute Craig Linsel helped them to a 4-1 triumph.
