The kitchen is almost as much a place for dancing as it is for cooking, new research into British families’ home habits has revealed.

Four in ten families report dancing around their kitchens during the last year, using items such as wooden spoons for microphones.

As many as 49 per cent of respondents said that a kitchen disco is a regular occurrence, with the number one song revealed as Dancing Queen by Abba (36 per cent), followed by I Want to Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston (34 per cent) and Happy by Pharrell Williams (28 per cent).

Also featured were classics such as Sweet Child O’ Mine by Guns N’ Roses (18 per cent), It’s Raining Men by the Weather Girls (16 per cent) and Staying Alive by the Bee Gees (15 per cent).

Saturday night at 6pm is the most common time for families to boogie on down, while half of parents said dancing with their kids had helped to lift their spirits over the last year. A further 53 per cent said disco dancing is great for their mental health, while the same number said kitchen parties were a fun way to let off steam, and 68 per cent agree that busting some moves together always cheers them up.

Yet half of children surveyed (47 per cent) admit dad’s dancing can be embarrassing while 38 per cent claim mum is just as bad. Around 34 per cent of families use wooden spoons for microphones, one third clear space for dancing and 32 per cent create a playlist to get everyone in a party mood.

Samantha Wilson, for L.O.L. Surprise! UK, who conducted the research of 2,000 families to mark the launch of their Dance Dance Dance toy said: “The

re-emergence of the kitchen

disco has undoubtedly brought some much-needed joy into our homes over the past year, with one in two families taking to a kitchen dance floor.

“It is brilliant to see how many families have experienced positive mental impacts from dancing together, using it as a fun tool to help lift their spirits and keep children laughing.”

Three in ten parents have been taught TikTok dances by the kids with Savage Love by Jason Derulo the number one dance (34 per cent), followed by U Can’t Touch This by MC Hammer (31 per cent). Almost 30 per cent of families danced on social media.
