Cuthbertson crowned champion as District Youth boxers excel
Ruby Cuthbertson led the way for District Youth Boxing Club after fighting her way to be crowned a Tyne Tees champion.
Cuthbertson, who was in the 45k category, faced a boxer from Brandon ABC and went on the front foot front the off.
Ruby showed a bit of class as she picked up a deserved victory which also saw her crowned the Tyne Tees champion.
With the victory, Cuthbertson now moves into the semi-finals in this weekend’s championships to be held at Vertu Motors Newcastle.
District Youth Boxing Club are also toasting success after having three other entries in a recent Regional Championship.
Joe Williams faced an opponent from Empire ABC in the 41.5k category, where he won with a unanimous verdict.
Dylan Gray and Leo Robinson got byes into the final, with Williams also facing Zak Hope, from Wearmouth ABC, but lost out in a tight contest.
Robinson boxed one of the tournament's favourites Sydney Welch, from Darlington, however, lost out in the bout of the day.
However, head coach Mick Wilson thought Leo had done enough to win and praised him for coming so close against Welch.
Finally, Gray, who was boxing in the 2007 46k, came up against a Lambton Street boxer
and promptly stopped him early into round two.
Afterwards, Dylan had to box in the quarter-finals where he faced a boxer with a record of 11 wins from his 13 bouts.
Dylan boxed on the back foot and showed how good he is at counter punching, claiming the victory with a solid performance.
Gray now joins Cuthbertson in semi-finals this weekend.
District Youth Juniors start their Championships at Belle Vue, Hartlepool, this weekend.
Oliver Robson, Bobby Patterson and Ethan Gilmore all start their journey in the ring.
