Journey the world using these books

Enjoy far flung travel from the comfort of your armchair

-

Here’s a great way to inspire youngsters to travel, while enjoying adventures from the comfort of your armchair, and planning trips for the future. Book sales have risen exponentially during the months of the pandemic, as people rediscovered a love of reading, and sought escape from the harsh realities of everyday life.

Parents also had more time to sit down and pore over books with their children.

This autumn, there’s the chance to whisk yourself, and your family, to far off places with new editions of Lonely Planet’s best selling coffee table books, The Travel Book, and The Travel Book Kids.

With travel resuming slowly, these books can inspire and inform your future plans.

The updated guides have new profiles and stunning photography to take you on journeys through every country in the world in an A-to-Z format.

Savour the quirky facts and Lonely Planet insights on when to visit, what to see and do, and learn more about the country’s culture from its film, music, food and drink, key phrases, and important achievements.

All of these aspects are brought to life with photographic portraits of people, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant street life scenes.

Learn how, each year in Nanaimo, the Canadians hold a bathtub race across the harbour. Or did you know that a significant proportion of Malaysia’s electricity is generated by sugar cane, that Panama hats actually originated from Ecuador, and the Lao people get through more rice than any other country, at 155kg of rice per person per year?

There are facts about 230 countries within The Travel Book, with 850 images, while The Travel Book for Kids is ideal for nine to 12 year olds, and sure to fire the imagination of the next generation of explorers.

Lonely Planet spokesperson, Chris Zeiher, said: “Over the last year, we have seen a real rekindled love of reading.

“We have seen that you don’t have to travel to experience the world and many explorers have been keeping the travelling dream alive by contemplating all of the places they’ve always wanted to visit and committing to one day doing so.

“The Travel Book provides a quick reference inspiration guide to every country in the world, while The Travel Book for Kids will inspire the next generation of explorers by helping them discover our diverse planet and its people.”

Lonely Planet has further new titles to offer, all of which could make ideal gifts.

They include: Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel, Where To Go When Europe, Wine Trails Europe, Epic Hikes of Europe, Best Day Walks Great Britain, Best Things in Life Are Free, The Dinosaur Book, How Spaceships Work and The Bug Atlas.

The Travel Book is available from November 2021, priced £40.00 hardback, at all good bookshops or at www.shop. lonelyplanet.com

The Travel Book for Kids can be bought from October 2021 at £14.99 hardback, also from bookshops or the Lonely Planet website.
