Chinese massage shop is approved
Plans for a new Chinese massage shop in Sunderland city centre have been given the stamp of approval.
Earlier this year, Sunderland City Council validated plans for 56 Frederick Street which included a change of use from a hair salon to a massage shop.
According to the planning application, no structural works were planned for the vacant property with the internal ground floor plan remaining unchanged.
An applicant statement included in the planning application also set out details on the scheme.
This included furnishing the building with a reception area and massage tables.
During consultation, no objections were raised by key council departments.
In a consultation statement, the local authority’s conservation team noted that no internal or external works were planned.
The statement reads: “56 Frederick Street is positioned within the heart of Sunniside Conservation Area and is part of the listed terraces of Frederick Street, the Grade I I listing covering numbers 45-58.
“The submitted information is relatively brief in its contents but the applicant has stated that no internal or external works are taking place, with the previous use of a hair
salon and this proposed use, as a massage parlour, likely meaning that alterations will not involve anything other than decoration.
“However, should more invasive alterations such as stud walling, or joinery be needed the applicant should check if a listed building consent is required.”
Sunderland City Council’s planning department approved the application.
