Sophisticated Scala in a class of its own

Czech manufacturer combines practicality with hi-tech modern features, says Carmel Stewart

The Czech-built sporty Skoda Scala hatchback is a great example of hi-tech sophistication and good old-fashioned practicality in a neatly packaged body. It was first introduced here in 2019 and, although it slots in between the long-establishedFabiaandthe Octavia, it has a look all of its own.

The sleekly styled 2021 version has strong shoulders, LEDlightsfrontandbackanda deep lower grille. Inside there is plenty of leg and head room whileupfrontthedriveriswell cateredforwithaconveniently angled central console.

Virtual information dials plus navigation information are set directly behind the well-padded, chunky steering wheel. The sophistication of the system is such that as the car moves from one maximum speed area to another so the speedo lights up to inform the driver of the change.

There are various storage spaces dotted about the spacious cabin and the boot is a hefty 467 litres which increases to 1,410 litres with the split back seats folded down – more than enough for a family shop or holiday luggage.

Trimlevelsnumberfour–S, SE, SE L (tested) and the Monte Carlospecial, witheverymodel boasting16-inchalloys,laneassist, a space saver spare wheel – no John Bull-type repair kit, thank goodness – Bluetooth, DAB radio, power door mirrors, all-round electric windows, remote central locking and hill hold control.

Theexceptionallywellspecified SE L adds an excellent satellite navigation, 17-inch alloys, LED daytime running lights, cruise control, eight speakers, rear privacy glass, rear parking sensors, smart link with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link connectivity and anumbrellainthedriver’sdoor – I kid you not. You will also find an ice scraper in the petrol cap.

As with so many manufacturers nowadays, Skoda has pared its engine options right down, offering only the most environmentally friendly units, in this case a 1.0litre turbocharged petrol achieving 94bhp or 109bhp and a larger 1.5litre petrol capable of 148bhp. A manual transmission is standard (five for the 94bhp and six for the 109bhp) but the smooth seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is an

option well worth considering especially in these days of irritatingly stop/start traffic.

Prices for the range start at £17,585 for the S trim 1.0litre 94bhp engine. The SE L trim starts at £20,800 powered by the same engine, with the DSG transmission available from £22,910. A step up to the 1.5litre engine adds a tad more power – taking it to 148bhp – as well as upping the starting price £23,000.

On the road it is a car which instils confidence the longer you are behind the wheel and away from the motorway madness. The steering is sharp, the suspension well balanced and theroadholdingjustperfectfor those A and B roads with twists and turns and long stretches of undulating tarmac.

If you are looking for a neat and tidy practical car which boasts both modern technology and practical family comfort the Skoda Scala should be top of you list.
