No trade deal with the USA

-

So Prime Minister Boris Johnson has failed to secure a trade deal with the Americans; well surprise surprise!

Why should the USA give Britain something that the rest of the world would dearly like to have?

Oh yes, it’s that special relationship!

Well, we may be allies when it comes to taking up arms, and goodness knows, we’ve supported the Yanks in recent years, but does such a relationship really exist?

People talk about the “mother country” well if my memory serves me correctly, the Americans cut their ties with us centuries ago.

And since then, the USA has gone its own way and become the world leader that we once were.

Friendly relations between the two countries, perhaps, but when it comes to trade that’s a different matter.

The Americans have, and always will, look after number one, just as any country should, and we and Boris Johnson are kidding ourselves if we think the USA is going to do us a favour trade-wise for “old time’s sake”.

We might end up with scraps from the American table but not the meal-ticket that a lot of people were anticipating.

What we need is a close neighbour who will buy our good and sell us theirs at a price we can all depend upon – a common market place.

Hmmm, that sounds familiar, didn’t we have such a set-up in place until... Brexit?

Boris Johnson and others promised to provide us with trade deals to compensate for those lost with mainland Europe; where are they?

Some will argue that these things take time, but we’re very quickly seeing the consequences of Brexit – now where can I go to get

some petrol or workers to fill the long list of job vacancies?
