Silksworth CW suffer penalty heartbreak after late fightback

-

Silksworth CW manager Jamie Cole admitted his players gave him everything as they suffered penalty shoot-out heartache in their Durham Trophy tie against Chester-le-Street United.

Jak McKinley and Ebenezer Addo put United in control at the interval but Liam Mulvain got Silksworth back into the tie with a fine freekick.

Abdullah Alawahdi looked to have put the visitors through in conventional fashion when he netted their third of the day to give them a two-goal lead with five minutes remaining.

But Silksworth battled back to force the tie to penalties thanks to Mulvain’s second of the day and a goal from substitute Mason Burton.

However, there was disappointment to follow for

Cole as they suffered a 4-2 defeat in the shoot-out and that left the Silksworth boss to hail his side’s effort in adversity.

He told The Echo: “It was another entertaining game against Chester-le-Street.

“My lads worked their socks off and that’s all I ask of them.

“We were two goals down with five minutes left and we gave it everything, that says it all.”

Elsewhere in the Trophy, Steven Johnson hit a hat-trick and Vincent Gash scored twice to inspire Darlington Town to a 7-1 home win against West Auckland Tunns.

Aidan Rutledge and Jonny Hirst netted as Gateshead Leam Rangers battled to a 2-1 win over league rivals Shildon Reserves and Max Stoker and Ross Tottle

helped Durham Corinthians come from behind to beat Northern Alliance club Winlaton Community.

A late goal from youngster Fin Smith was enough to help FC Hartlepool claim a narrow home win against struggling Coxhoe Athletic in an Alan Hood Charity Cup preliminary round tie.

Richmond Town strolled to a 7-0 win against Norton and Stockton Ancients in the first round and a Jamie Bennett brace and a goal each from Tom Roundry, Liam Appleby, Craig Foster and Peter Crawford put Shotton Colliery on they way to a 6-1 win at Washington United.

Top goalscorer Michael McGee scored five times and Nathan Bayes struck a brace as Wolviston romped to a 7-2 in their Monkwearmouth Charity Cup round two tie at Darlington RA.
