Washington post win, glad not to be behind the Times

Washington EMS hosted Times Inn on Saturday in the Sunderland & District Over40s League – but their comprehensive 3-1 win should have been more convincing.

Washington started really well and should have scored when winger Danny Murray missed a chance on the goal line.

It was all one way but Washington struggled to score until midfielder Carl Robson picked a ball up and unleashed a 30-yard rocket which flew past the TImes Inn ‘keeper.

Amazingly, the Times Inn levelled almost from the kick off, when striker Anthony Carter fired home from the edge of the box.

The score stayed level until half time but Murray again missed a great chance to head home at the far post.

The second half was similar to the first, with Washington dominating the game but missing chances to score. Both Kindon and Gamble missed great opportunities to put the game out of reach.

Washington went 2-1 up when Burns headed home a great cross from Jones.

Gamble also headed home a great cross from Kindon in the last minute to win the game at 3-1. In the Premier League, Hartlepool F CB lu es put in an excellent team effort to beat Killingworth 2-1 in a tight game that could have gone either way.

A strong Wallsend Boys Club side took an early lead in their home game against Penshaw Catholic Club but found themselves 3-1 behind after half an hour, as excellent counter-attackingby Pen shaw saw goals from Chris Moody, Paul Hodgson and Simon Holland put the away team in control.

Despite a lot of pressure from Wallsend, a well-organised Penshaw defence and defensive midfield stoutly withheld any Wallsend attacks and always looked dangerous in attack – but had to wait until the 70th minute for Luke Charlesworth to fire in the fourth goal.

Easington CIU no doubt travelled back down the A19 wondering how they managedto lose their game against

Marden after dominating the first half.

A Barry Frost strike from 30 yards gave them a half-time lead which was doubled very quickly in the second half by John Hutton.

Marden then came to life and brought the score level with two Tony Healer goals. With the game in the balance, Femi Akinbolu then gave Marden the lead.

He then put the game beyond Easington’s reach when he rounded Ea sing ton‘ keeper A la nMc George and stroked the ball into the empty net.

Pelton Crown travelled to South Shields and came away with a 1-0 win, thanks to a Sean Devlin header. In Division Two, Hartlepool Raby Arms hosted WashingtonBid dick and the game ended 1-1.

A depleted Rolls-Royce edged to the victory over Redcar Newmarket Rolls went ahead just after half time when Davy Lo max fired in a free kick from 25 yards.

Rolls put the game beyond doubt when Jonny Nichols tapped in from close range after a Garry Johnson shot. Hartlepool Cricket Club put in a really poor performance at South Shields and duly lost 5-0.

Hartlepool Vets claimed a narrow win over Willow Pond at home.

The game between an under-strength Grindon and Con sett turned out to be a very entertaining fixture. Grindon went straight on the attack, with Diamond scoring after four minutes.

Consett hit straight back when bad marking by Grindon defence allowed Thompson to equalise. Diamond should have restored the lead when, with only the ‘keeper to beat, he was halted by a challenge.

After 18 minutes, and against the run of play, Con sett took the lead when unmarked Liddle converted.

However, Diamond equalisedfor Grind on, making it 2-2 at half time.

Thompson put Consett in the lead at 3-2 after 60 minutes but, once again, Diamond equalised to complete his hattrick.

Grindon kept on pressing but Consett broke away and scored through Wheatley to win the game, after some poor marking by the Grindon defence.
