Action groups leads to improvement

-

“Mighty oaks from tiny acorns grow” is so relevant when a single member or small group in a community organise themselves in pursuit of a cause they see as worthy.

In 1981 a small group of enthusiasts attended an Alnwick District Council meeting to request support in entering the Northumbria in Bloom competition. They agreed to back us, we formed the Alnwick in Bloom group, and 40 years later, still active, reflect on the successes whilst forward planning with the blessing of the Town Council.

Our in-house competitions are diverse, from children’s painting and giant sunflowers to commercial premises and private gardens, all culminating in the annual awards presentation. Northumbria in Bloom premier competition embraces villages, towns and cities from Tweed to Tees, rewarding individuals, groups and settlements for performance in support of their environment. Alnwick has recently been informed of its tenth successive gold award, and several local towns and villages have achieved remarkable success over time.

But glittering prizes aside, every entrant is a winner because the existence of an action group in a community ultimately leads to improvement. During a decade or so as a lead judge for NIB I experienced first-hand how powerful the resolve for change can be, especially in urban areas.

Nature’s planting time, which is with us now, gives everyone the opportunity to enhance their immediate surroundings. The simple introduction of a woody perennial, dwarf or tall, ornamental or fruit-bearing, in a container or the open garden, might appear insignificant but it is such a positive move.

Plants, especially those in containers, need our attention to give of their best and survive seasonal extremes. This alone brings a sense of achievement but it`s only part of the positive payback their presence contributes toward our wellbeing. Plants bestow a sense of calm!
