-

Laylie Heath has created a little bit of history for Sunderland Amateur Boxing Club.

Laylie is the first ever female in history of the boxing club to win a title after coming out on top in the England Boxing National Junior Championships.

Sunderland’s Heath, in the under 52kg, faced Jessica Keeton, of Scunthorpe Boxing Club, in the final.

Both girls went at it from first bell and produced a lively contest. However, afteratough threerounds, itwasLayliewho was named winner on a split decision.

Sunderland also had Joe Padgett take part in the championships and he was paired upagainstamoreexperienced John Tom Varey, of Box Smart Elite (Walsall), in the under 42kg cadet category.

Both came out from the off with very fast hand speed.

However, after three hardfoughtrounds,Vareycameout as the winner.

*Great Britain’s Alex Dowsett failed in his attempt to regain the UCI Hour Record on Wednesday in Mexico.

The British rider, 33, who briefly held the record in 2015, rode 54.555 kilometres over the hour but never really looked like threatening Victor Campenaerts’ benchmark of 55.089km set in April 2019.

He said: “We chucked everythingatthis.BothChanel (Dowsett’s partner) and the small team around us, who’ve donealotofworktogettohere. The target was to see how far I can go and 54.555 is as far as I can go.”
