Times go behind as hosts Penshaw clock up victory

- By Vince Williams nep.sport@jpimedia.co.uk

Penshaw Catholic Club produced a stunning performance to ease to an 8-0 triumph against the Times Inn in the Sunderland & District Over-40s League.

However, in the first half, the away side played with great spirit and, had it not have been for a couple of great saves from Penshaw’s stand-in ‘keeper, they may well have reached half time level.

The second half was a different story, with Penshaw’s fast, attacking play getting into full flow. The goals quickly followed with the Times Inn players tiring under constant pressure.

Paul Hodgson bagged a super hat-trick, with other goals coming from Moody, who netted two, Spence, Holland and Charlesworth.

In the Premier League, Hartlepool FC Blues went down to two late goals after a disappointing display at Northumberland side Marden.

In Division Two, Hartlepool Cricket Club lost 5-2 at Peterlee Helford.

Hartlepool Raby Arms travelled to Seaton Buildings but a much-improved performance ended in a flattering 3-1 win for the hosts.

Raby Arms went a goal down inside 10 minutes but rallied to create several chances, with only the finish missing.

However, they deservedly levelled when Thompson reacted first to fire home after good work by Robinson.

Raby finished the half stronger and continued the same way after the break. Their undoing, however, came from a breakaway, with the Raby defence outpaced.

Another breakaway after possession was turned over in Seaton's half saw the home forward complete his hat-trick to put the game out of reach.

West Moor led 2-0 at half time but Houghton Cricket came out fighting in the second half. They

had good possession but couldn't find the net.

In Division Four, Hartlepool Seaton Carew continued their great form with a 6-4 win over the Philadelphia.

Willow Pond got back to winning ways with a solid away performance against Catchgate, winning 4-2.

A Pond corner saw the Catchgate defence block Churchill's shot but ‘keeper Humphries couldn't stop Pond striker Lee firing home from close range.

Catchgate equalised from a left wing throwin by Makepeace which saw Douglas shoot from distance over the Pond defence, and ‘keeper Tilbury, into the top corner.

The game featured endto-end action and Pond took the lead just before the break.

Dalgleish brought the ball out from defence and played a sublime pass to striker Lee, which saw him dribble around four Catchgate players and shoot into the bottom corner.

The second half started well for Pond, with a free kick taken by Vincent that Humphries couldn't hold and Pond winger Lock followed up to tap home.

The home side piled

on the pressure and Pond lost Lee to an ankle injury, with substitute Golightly playing the lone striker role and going close with a shot straight at Humphries.

A good counter attack by Catchgate through midfield set up Robinson, which finished with Hoey unluckily deflecting the ball over Tilbury.

The home side raised their game trying to snatch an equaliser but Pond held firm.

Patience in attack paid off with a ball into the sixyard box for striker Golightly.

He showed skill to control the ball, turn his marker and chip goalkeeper

Humphries to extend Pond's lead and confirm the victory.
