Final £70million stage of Sunderland’s Strategic Transport Corridor opens to drivers. It comes more than six years after work on the first section was completed.

Eric Murphy: £70million to visit a city that has been decimated by the council, the town centre is an embarrassment.

Ronnie Johnson: Why are some people not happy whatever the council do with ever increasing traffic these road improvements are vital to keep the traffic moving.

Michael Dodds: Why are some people on this site being negative about reopening a shipyard in Sunderland and creating thousands of jobs?

SD Photos: About time it opened just what we needed.

Micky N: And drivers still can't use it as the cones are all over Sunderland with roadworks.

Kieth Hamilton: Doesn't look very environmentally sensitive. No doubt the trees will come later once you realise how bad it'll look.

Shaun Bruce: Don’t get why they’ve closed the road off from Matalan down to the climbing wall though, seems a bit pointless.

Gavin Kirby: Six years to finish a project and they think that is worthy of praise?

Steven Logan: Very good road this used it tonight in both directions saves time, not a cone or bit of litter in sight, well done S.C.C on delivery of this project, now that southbound slip road is open at Downhill Lane / A19 Testos project things are looking a lot better.

Diana Lambton: It's fantastic, I drove up it today, direct link from the new bridge straight up to B and Q.

Topher Kii: Great! Can't wait to stop at a red light, drive 30mph for 40 seconds then stop at another red light. Then wait to cross the new bridge, at a red light, while somehow only four cars are going across it (has anyone ever driven over Northern Spire while a car is coming the opposite way?) then stop at a red light on the other side.

Wilf Newall: Brilliant, really needed.
