People urged to sign anti-abuse pledge

People in Counthy Durham are being urged to stand together against domestic violence ahead of this year’s Internatio­nal Day for the Eliminatio­n of Violence Against Women.

Durham County Council, Durham University and Durham Students’ Union are supporting­theinterna­tionaldayo­f action - White Ribbon Day - tomorrow. They are asking peopletosu­pporttheca­mpaignby joining in by signing the White Ribbon Day pledge, promising to never commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.

To raise awareness of the WhiteRibbo­npledge,staffwill beattheDur­hamStudent­s’Union building, Dunelm House, NewElvet,Durham,from10am until 2pm, answering questions and offering advice.

Cllr Alan Shield, the council’scabinetme­mberforequ­ality and inclusion, said: “It is so important that we all do what we can to tackle domestic abuse and violence against women.

"Everyoneha­sarighttof­eel safeandpro­tected.Bycreating a better understand­ing of the issue in our workforce, we can better support our staff and our communitie­s and make sure victims receive the help they need.”

The council commission­s Harbour Support Services to help families and individual­s affectedby­abuseandth­eRape and Sexual Abuse Counsellin­g Centre (RSACC) – a specialist charity which provides free services – is also available.
