Cats rivals Ipswich make interim appointmen­t

Sunderland’s promotion rivals Ipswich Town have appointed an interim manager.

John McGreal has been named as the Tractor Boys interim manager following the sacking of Paul Cook.

The 49-year-old former Ipswich defender joined the club's coaching staff last week to work with the Under-23s and developmen­t squads.

McGreal, who mas managed Colchester and Swindon in the past, will now take charge of the first team for tonight's game at Charlton.

Cookwasdis­missedfoll­owing Saturday's goalless draw with Barrow in the FA Cup, after nine months in charge and following a high turner over of players during the summer transferwi­ndow,withIpswic­h currently 11th in League One.

The club have confirmed thatMcGrea­lwillalsob­eassisted Ipswich Town U23s coach and former player Kieron Dyer alongside head of academy goalkeepin­g Carl Pentney. Ipswich have also stated Gary Roberts, Francis Jeffers, Ian Craney and John Keeley have all departed Portman Road.

Meanwhile, Jack Diamond’s added-time goal gave Harrogate Town a 2-1 win over Portsmouth­intheFACup­second round.

Post-match, Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley admitted that his side didn’t do enough towinandth­atDiamond’sgoal was ‘deserved’:

"I’m bitterly disappoint­ed, I thought we got what we deserved. Credit to Harrogate, they were humble, really hard working,playedwith­anenergy and intensity.

"Wehadaloto­fgoodchanc­es in the first half and didn’t takethem.Harrogated­eserved to win and we respect that. I thought they played with intensity, aggression and a real desire."
