Swan Song (Apple TV+, from December 17) Writer-director Benjamin Cleary’s tear-jerking drama will not only tug at your heartstrings, it will leave you pondering over what you would do in the central character’s position too. Cameron Turner is a happily married husband and father who seems to have it all, but his life threatens to come crashing down around him when he’s receives the devastating news that he’s suffering from cancer. However, Cameron’s doctor comes up with a solution that will mean his family will never have to know he’s gone – he could be replaced by a clone. He wrestles with the idea of changing fate, but learns a lot about life and love along the way. Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris (who both appeared in Moonlight) star alongside Glenn Close and Awkwafina.

The Witcher (Netflix, from December 17)

The first series of this fantasy drama based on the book series by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski may not have been as universally successful as Game of Thrones, but it filled a gap in the lives of some of those hooked on the adaptation of George RR Martin’s works. Now it’s back for a second run, with a third already in the pipeline. Once again Henry Cavill heads the cast as the titular character, monster-hunter Geralt of Rivia. When we catch up with him, he’s convinced that Yennifer lost her life at the Battle of Sodden, so takes Princess Cirilla to his childhood home of Kaer Morhen, where he thinks she will be safe. Although under threat from extraordinary beings, it’s the power she carries within her that could prove to be the girl’s downfall.

Foodtastic (Disney+, from December 15)

Disney+ is launching a new cooking contest it hopes will be to everybody’s taste. Hosted by Keke Palmer, each edition follows the efforts of those taking part as they create incredible sculptures out of food, with each one inspired by a film or TV series created by the legendary studio. Every episode carries a different theme, including Ant-Man and The Wasp, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, Star Wars and The Avengers. And if you think it sounds like a lot of food will be wasted, don’t worry – every concoction will be donated to a food bank to help those in need.
