Cole: We can’t defend as a team – it’s costing us too many points

Silksworth CW manager Jamie Cole hit out at his side’s defensive display as they ended 2021 with a defeat at Shildon Reserves.

Josh Winthrop and Jordan Dagg continued their good form in front of goal as they found the net for Cole’s side.

But individual errors meant they were left emptyhanded in their final game before the Christmas break.

The Railwaymen’s second string were in clinical mood as goals from Steve Dawson, Oliver Johnson and Calvin Payne gave them all three points, and left Cole annoyed by his side’s performance.

He said: “It was a frustrating day all round because we gifted three goals to Shildon.

“Individual errors have been our problem once again.

“We can’t defend as a team and it is costing us points.

“Hopefully, with two weeks off now, we can recharge and go again in the new year.”

The defeat has left Silksworth in fifth place in the Wearside League table as they prepare to take a twoweek break from competitive action.

Farringdon Detached also head into the festive break on a negative after they fell to a 4-2 defeat at Annfield Plain.

Goals from Jack Dockerty and James Talbot were not

enough for Liam Lay’s side as they were beaten by a Connor Shaw brace and a goal apiece from Jordan Shaw and Marty Alison.

Gateshead Leam Rangers gave a big boost to their title

hopes as they romped to an 8-1 home win against West Auckland Tunns.

Aidan Rutledge led the way with a hat-trick, Adam Byron scored twice and their were single strikes for Kain

Reed, Robbie Houghton and Jonny Hirst as Leam ran riot.

That result left Leam sat in third place in the table three points behind leaders Chester-le-Street United, and they also hold three games in hand on the table toppers.

Elsewhere, Richmond Town took all three points from their visit to Beechfield Park with a 3-0 win against Coxhoe Athletic.

And Shotton Colliery failed in their bid to head into the new year sat in the top four of the standings after they fell to a 4-3 defeat against Norton and Stockton Ancients.
